24 My Colleague Needs Urgent Help

My colleague is in distress or crisis

If you believe your colleague is at risk of imminent harm to self and/or others, or requires immediate medical attention, call 911. Refer to this quick guide for more information including crisis line phone numbers:

My colleague is unable to teach their class today due to a crisis and I need to cancel their class

If a colleague is unable to teach their class(es) because of an emergency, please e-mail their Dean’s Office / Department Assistant as soon as possible so that students can be notified.

My colleague has been impacted by sexual violence

If a colleague has experienced sexual violence and there is an immediate concern for their health or safety, call 911. You can also refer your colleague to the 24 hour Vancouver Rape Relief Crisis Line at 604-872-8212. You should call together or your colleague should enlist the support of a family member or friend. If the incident took place on campus, also call Security. Student Rights and Responsibilities offers support for staff and faculty impacted by sexual violence regardless of when or where the incident took place. You can refer your colleague to https://www.kpu.ca/sexual-misconduct/ to access resources, policies and contact information. You can also refer your colleague to KPU’s Employee and Family Assistance Program at 1-800-663-1142 for 24/7/365 confidential assistance.

My colleague has experienced a traumatic event, is having suicidal thoughts or is having difficulty coping, but there is no urgent risk of harm to self or others

Refer your colleague to KPU’s Employee and Family Assistance Program provider, Homewood Health, at 1-800-663-1142 for 24/7/365 confidential assistance including counselling, coaching, information and support. You should call together or your colleague should enlist the support of a family member or friend.
