Compile Strategies for Working with Diverse Learners Online

PURPOSE OF THE TASK: This task is designed for collaborativist knowledge base building. Every individual student contributes to the building process by adding to the compilation of teaching strategies relating to the work with diverse learners online.

TECHNOLOGY: For this task we will re-use the collaborative ETHERPAD students have been using in 5.2 and 5.3.

INSTRUCTIONS: Go back to our collaborative document and add three strategies that you think will be effective for instructors when wanting to address specific aspects of diversity in their online learners. Feel free to add to any of the topics compiled in the list. Help us see that you’ve made the contributions by putting your name behind each of your suggested strategies.

Please complete this task before midnight on Sunday, November 3, 2019.

NOTE that you can export the whole document with all answers and strategies as a pdf at any point in time, which you might find useful as a future resource for your own online courses. Look at the screenshot for instructions.

TEACHING INTENTIONS:

Instructors can energize online learning environments and empower learners to take responsibility for their own learning when building in self-direction, collaboration and community into the design and facilitation of online courses. The students and the instructor(s) are partners in building the knowledge relating to the course and “[t]his collaborative acquisition of knowledge is one key to the success of creating an online learning environment. Activities that require student interaction and encourage a sharing of ideas promote a deeper level of thought.” (Conrad & Donaldson, 2004)
