(How to use it)

You previously learned that las preposiciones de lugar (prepositions of location) are used to tell where things are in relation to places, peoples, or things.

Por ejemplo:

• La carnicería está al lado de la iglesia. (The butcher shop is next to the church)
• Mi casa está lejos de la universidad. (My house is far from the university)
• El libro de español está sobre la mesa. (The Spanish textbook is on the table)

Entonces, las preposiciones en español are used to connect two elements of a sentence to express how they relate to each other

Por ejemplo:

• Ayer yo no fui a la universidad. (Yesterday I did not go to the university)
• La película fue sobre un crimen en Buenos Aires. (The movie was about a crime in Buenos Aires)
• Lucía y yo hicimos ejercicios por 3 horas. (Lucía and I exercised for 3 hours)

You learned above that the prepositions por and para have multiple translations in English. Entonces, to master when to use por vs. para you need to learn its respective uses.

1. Los verbos reflexivos en el pretérito indicativo
(Reflexive verbs in simple past tense)

You already know that los verbos reflexivos en el presente simple indicativo are conjugated exactly the same way as their counterparts non-reflexive regular and irregular verbs with the exception that reflexive pronouns must be added before the conjugated verb as in:

• Tú te levantas (from levantarse)
• Ella se maquilla (from maquillarse)
• Nosotros nos acostamos (from acostarse)
• Ustedes se duermen (from dormirse)
• Yo me voy (from irse)
• Ellos se preparan (from prepararse)

Entonces, whether it be in simple present tense, simple past tense or any other verbal tense, los verbos reflexivos en español always take reflexive pronouns because the subject of the sentence and the receiver of the action is the same.

Cómo conjugar los verbos reflexivos en el pretérito indicativo
(How to conjugate reflexive verbs in simple past tense).

Just like in the simple present tense, in order to conjugate los verbos reflexivos en el pretérito indicativo you also have to remove the -se attached to the end of the verb in order to add the mandatory reflexive pronouns before the verb in the simple past tense. In the case of regular reflexive verbs, you also have to remove the -ar, -er, -ir from the root of the verb in order to add endings that agree with the subject doing the action in the simple past tense. In the case of irregular reflexive verbs such as irse above, you have to conjugate it like the irregular verb ir.

You learned the simple past tense endings for regular and irregular verbs in the previous grammar section!

Los verbos reflexivos listed above that show a vowel at the end in parenthesis are reflexive verbs that end in -ir and carry a vowel change in the preterit in 3rd persons singular (él, ella, usted) and 3rd person plural (ellos, ellas, ustedes) only, as you also learned in the previous grammar section!

Por ejemplo:

• Anoche ella se durmió a la medianoche.
• ¿Se despidieron ustedes de la profesora después de la clase?
• El viernes mi tío Pepe se vistió con las mejores ropas para la fiesta.

En el pretérito indicativo due to a doble e (ee) in the root of the infinitive verb, the following reflexive verb will have an irregularity in 3rd person singular and plural as follows:

• Caerse (to fall): él, ella, used se cayó / ellos, ellas, ustedes se cayeron

2. El verbo gustar y verbos similares en el pretérito indicativo

You already know that el español uses the following verbs to express gustos y disgustos:

encantar	to love	cargar	to be annoying
fascinar	to be fascinating	faltar	to be lacking

You also know that el verbo gustar en el presente indicativo becomes the basis to conjugate all other verbs used to express gustos y disgustos en el presente indicativo.

En el pretérito indicativo el verbo gustar also becomes the basis to conjugate all other verbs used to express gustos y disgustos en el pretérito indicativo.

¡Hola! Voy a hablar de mi fin de semana pasado. El fin de semana pasado mi esposo y yo fuimos al supermercado para comprar comestibles. El sábado nos levantamos temprano, tomamos desayuno y luego hicimos una lista de cosas para comprar. Fuimos al supermercado en auto. Después llegamos a la casa y guardamos los comestibles en la cocina y en el refrigerador. Yo me sentí muy cansada después del supermercado así que descansé por una hora y mi esposo se preparó algo para comer.  En la tarde yo corregí muchas tareas de mis estudiantes y bebí una copa de vino tinto (o dos ¡jajajaja!). ¡A mí me gusta el vino, ¡jajajajaj!
