Use el + [day of the week] to talk about what happens on a specific day.
Use los + [day of the week in plural] when an activity occurs regularly.
- El lunes yo trabajo. On Monday, I work. (which means I work this or next Monday)
- Los lunes trabajo. On Mondays, I work. (which means I work every Monday)
Notice that no tenemos la palabra “on” en español. We use the articles el/los only. We use these because the days are masculinos.
Notice that in the second ejemplo, the subject pronoun “yo” has been omitted because the conjugation of verbs en español is enough to show the person (first person, second person, or third person) and number (singular or plural) of the subject.

2. Los adverbios de tiempo en español (Adverbs of time in Spanish)
Los adverbios (adverbs) are words that modify or describe a verb, an adjective or even another adverb.
Los adverbios de tiempo tells us when an action happens, for how long it happens, and also how often it happens.

Los adverbios de tiempo are used to talk about una actividad o acción continua o habitual en el presente. Entonces, el presente simple indicativo of the verb (actividad) is required in the sentence.
- Generalmente los sábados yo hablo por teléfono con mi mamá.
- Mi esposo nunca corre en el parque.
- Los estudiantes siempre estudian en la biblioteca de la universidad.
- A menudo mi esposo y yo miramos las noticias en la televisión.
Although en español los aderbios de tiempo can be placed before or after the verb, las personas hispanohablantes normally prefer to place them before the verb as seen in the examples above.

1. El presente progresivo en español
(The present continuous in Spanish)
El presente progresivo en español functions like the present continuous in English as it is used when the action we’re talking about is happening around the time of speaking, or it will be happening soon after speaking.
- In English, we use the present continuous or present progressive in the following way:
- I am walking. = The verb to be + verb + -ING ending
- In Spanish we form el presente progresivo in a similar way:
- Yo estoy caminando = El verbo estar + verbo stem + ending (gerundio)
En español, the ending or gerundio depends on the type of verb: -ar, -er, -ir.

- Estar + comer = Él está comiendo la cena. (-er verb so ending = –iendo)

El gerundio -yendo (The ending or gerund -yendo)
The following -er or –ir verbs carry a verb stem with double vowel. In this case the the ending or gerundio -iendo will change to -yendo.

2. Presente simple indicativo vs Presente progresivo
(Simple present tense vs present continuous)
La tabla que sigue resume los usos of the 2 types of presents en español you have learned so far:

La percepción de la privacidad en el mundo hispanohablante
(Perception of privacy in the Spanish-speaking world)
En la unidad 2 you learned that las personas en el mundo hispanohablante tend to share similar values on how they build and maintain relationships with others as well as similar values on expectations about how to socialize.
You also learned that las personas hispanohablantes tend to be more emotionally expressive and they use a lot of non-verbal behaviours (NVBs) when talking and socializing.
You learned that when socializing, las personas hispanohablantes prefer poco espacio personal (low-personal space). This means that las personas hispanohablantes prefer to interact at a close distance and frequently touch one another while interacting.

En la cultura hispanohablante, las personas son más importantes que los espacios de privacidad (privacy spaces).
En el círculo familiar (family circle) y en el círculo de amigos (friendship circle) la vida personal (personal life) no es muy privada. This translates to ¡hablar de todo!
