The Learning Centers provide a range of free workshops which help you develop skills and strategies to enhance your learning.

BUILDING EFFECTIVE STUDY HABITS

Ten Tips for Online Learning
This workshop will help you to choose strategies to understand your course requirements, manage your time, and effectively learn from your course materials.

Time Management Strategies

Online learning allows you a great deal of freedom to set your learning schedule.  In this workshop, you will discuss steps for creating semester, weekly, and daily schedules that incorporate principles for effective online learning and adapt to your unique situation.

Say No To Procrastination
Learn to identify the key factors that make you postpone. Evaluate if the Pomodoro technique may be a part of your solution. Develop an action plan for overcoming procrastination on a specific course-related task. You will also learn some motivational systems to support successful task completion.

Preparing for An Open Book Exam
This workshop will give you strategies to prepare for the Open Book Exam and writing well in the exams.

Master Your Memory
In this workshop, you will learn how memory works and ideal strategies for remembering more of what you learn. You will also be able to experiment with new techniques, like visualization, mnemonic devices, and smartphone apps to help you to learn.

Reading Texts and Taking Notes
This session will include organizing your reading strategy to make sense of all new information from your textbooks and lectures so that you can be successful in your courses. You will learn how to listen for key points and summarize main ideas, preparing for more meaningful and effective study notes. Find a note-taking strategy to suit you and develop a plan for organizing your notes.

IMPROVE YOUR WRITING

Writing Mini Boot Camp: University Essays: First Steps
This workshop will introduce the requirements and expectations for university-level writing as well as effective strategies and resources to help the writing process. Learn how to craft a thesis statement, structure an argument, and begin to write clearly and concisely.

Writing Mini Boot Camp: Get Past Writer’s Block
Come to this workshop to learn a variety of techniques to generate ideas for your papers or assignments. From there, you will learn strategies to organize your ideas and finally have hands-on ideas to outline them.

Want to improve your writing assignments? Attend this workshop to learn how!

Writing Mini Boot Camp: Write in Your Own Words
Do you need to use information from several sources in your paper? Confused about how to write an effective paraphrase? You will leave this workshop with practical strategies for reading sources, taking effective resource notes, and integrating paraphrased information into a strong academic paper.

SCIENCE SKILLS

Writing Right In Biology
In this workshop, you will learn to plan activities to increase your learning, discuss the structure and function of responses in Biology, compare and contrast using “how” and “why” statements, learn how to use “whereas” in paragraph format as well as analyze exam items carefully which will lead to better results.

SOFTWARE SKILLS

Excel – Basic Skills for University Students
Learn how to format data, copy and paste values, use the autofill features and how to use the function builder to easily analyze data.

Excel – Intermediate Skills for University Students
Learn to analyze large datasets by developing tables and pivot tables and visualize results with charts
