11.1.6 A Selective Reaction

Gregory Millard

Sixth, although fundamentalists are reacting against aspects of modernity, this reaction is seldom total; rather, it is a selective reaction (Ozzano, 2016: 59). Fundamentalists seek to roll back specific behaviours, beliefs, practices, and institutions they deem incompatible with the religious identity. For example, many Christian fundamentalists denounce evolutionary science on the grounds that it contradicts the account of human origins told in the Bible. But they do not typically denounce the physics and chemistry that produce the automobile and modern communications technologies (Peels, 2023: 740-741). These are thought to be compatible with the religious identity and therefore non-problematic.
