E. Assessment

Assessment is always front-of-mind for instructors and one of the most common questions around UDL is how it can help inform assessment.

Below are some ideas for assessment that can be useful as reported by the students who shared with us their thoughts on UDL and good design.

  1. Design for multiple representations of content
  2. Offer choice between two types of assessment: e.g., essay or exam, portfolio or interview
  3. Assessments should include evaluating the boundaries between concepts to understand their relatedness
  4. Test students on how they are connecting information in addition to how much they can recall
  5. Tie assessments to particular interests in content
  6. Make assessments construct relevant
  7. Assess through student-designed experiments
  8. Use memorized information to synthesize and interpret content
  9. Open ended vs. closed assessments
  10. Offer a traditional choice (essay or test) and multimedia choice (poster, video, or infographic)
