4.1 Naming of Benzene and Benzene Derivatives

The naming of benzene and simple benzene derivatives has been included in section 2.4 in Book I. Several highlights and more examples are given here.

  • In simple compounds, benzene is the parent name.
  • For some substituted benzenes, the substituent and the ring are taken together and the common names are used broadly.

  • For disubstituted benzene, the prefixes ortho- (o-), meta- (m-), and para- (p-) could be used for 1,2-, 1,3- and 1,4- respectively.
  • When the benzene ring is regarded as a substituent, it is called a phenyl group.
