Provide multiple ways to participate

Many institutions are moving away from participation grades, which can be difficult to score and classify. Some instructors grade for “preparation” or “engagement” and use a rubric to score participation points.

Inclusive classroom participation—students confidently engage in a respectful space where every voice matters.

Meaningful participation is often used as a reward for contributing to class discussion, but it can disadvantage the international students who experience barriers to participating. Consider experimenting with alternative modes of participation including small group discussions, think-pair-share exercises, individual meetings with the instructor, blogs, discussion forum posts, or other assignments that allow students to demonstrate their engagement with course content.
