Explain the “hows and whys” of Canadian academic culture.
Be explicit about rules and expectations, especially unwritten rules that students who are new to university may not know. Following recommendations from universal design for learning, discuss the “hidden curriculum,” or the informal cultural know-how that it takes to be a successful student in a Canadian university. This tacit knowledge can include:
- Who to go to for help at KPU
- Guidelines for plagiarism
- Expectations for active learning/participation [PDF]

Some international students may be used to a teacher-centred classroom where the emphasis is on rote learning. It is important to explain to students who are used to this type of teaching to understand why participation in courses is important in Canadian universities. Use concrete examples to explain your expectations for participation and how participation connects to the course’s learning outcomes.
Furthermore, students might interpret instructors’ suggestions or recommendations as optional or not necessary. Consider using direct injunctions rather than indirect suggestions to frame course expectations.
