Indigenous Voices Matter

In university and workplace environments, Indigenous voices are too often underrepresented, misunderstood, or burdened with unfair expectations. In this chapter, we hear from an Indigenous student and educator who share their experiences of being treated as the “expert” in the room and expected to speak on behalf of all Indigenous peoples, even when doing so feels uncomfortable or isolating. They describe the weight of assumptions, stereotypes, and differential treatment from peers and instructors, along with the pain of having deeply personal topics like residential schools or missing and murdered Indigenous women treated as abstract classroom debates, when these are realities that have directly impacted their families and communities.

These stories also speak to the harm caused by cultural appropriation, the casual use of racial slurs, and the persistence of damaging stereotypes. For many Indigenous students and staff, navigating these spaces can feel like a constant balancing act between representing their identity and protecting their well-being. Centering Indigenous voices is not just a matter of inclusion. it is a necessary step toward truth, respect, and reconciliation. This chapter invites readers to listen deeply and challenge the ways colonial attitudes continue to show up in everyday interactions.

While this chapter includes the story from one student, our conversations reflected what I’ve heard from other Indigenous students and colleagues. I invite you to reach out if you would like to include your story in this OER. Please email Lindsay.Wood@kpu.ca.

Before we begin, take a moment to listen to Sylvia’s story. In this video, Sylvia shares a deeply personal story about the ongoing impact of residential schools and intergenerational trauma in her family. Her words remind us that this is not just history — it’s lived experience, and it demands more than sympathy. Listening with respect and committing to change is part of true reconciliation.

After listening to the stories in this chapter, how will you move beyond sympathy and take meaningful steps toward reconciliation in your classroom or workplace?
