Words Matters
Resources and Suggested Activities

Reflective Activities
Choose one or two of the stories shared in this chapter (written or video) from marginalized students about why words matter and their impact. Next, ask students/educators to reflect on the following questions:
- Reflecting on the idea that words matter, how can we be more intentional in the way we engage with others especially when it comes to race, ethnicity, or cultural background? What might it look like to create conversations that prioritize connection over explanation? What assumptions based on appearance, accent, name or cultural background have you made, even unintentionally?
- Have I ever dismissed or laughed at a “harmless joke” that might actually carry deeper harm or reinforce stereotypes? How can I recognize the difference between intent and impact in everyday interactions?
- How do I respond when someone shares that a comment or action was hurtful? What can I do to create safer, more respectful spaces where people feel heard and valued?
- How can I use my words and actions to support people from different backgrounds and speak up when others are being left out or treated unfairly in school or social situations? After reading these stories, what is one concrete action I can take as a student, peer, or educator to disrupt stereotypes?
- How will I hold myself accountable to that commitment?
