Inclusion Matters

Reflective Activities
Choose one or two of the stories shared in this chapter (written or video) from marginalized students about their thoughts and experiences around inclusion in the classroom and workplace. Next, ask students/educators to reflect on the following questions:
- What forms of emotional and mental labour did these students describe, and how might those often go unnoticed in academic or workplace environments?
- Consider how educators or peers may unintentionally contribute to or ease this burden.
- How do everyday interactions like being asked to share a perspective, being overlooked in a group, or hearing a dismissive comment impact a student’s sense of belonging?
- Reflect on a time you witnessed or experienced something similar. What was the impact?
- What assumptions about language, appearance, or communication styles are we making that may unintentionally exclude others?
- How can we challenge these assumptions in our own classrooms or workplaces?
- Several students emphasized the importance of “small actions” and “active listening.”
- What are three specific actions you can take to foster a more inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone?
- Many students had to prove their worth or adjust their identity to fit in.
- How can university policies, teaching practices, or team dynamics be changed to ensure that authenticity is seen as a strength rather than a barrier?
