Choose one or two of the stories, videos, or case studies shared in this chapter Equity Matters from students and educators with lived experience about inclusion in the classroom and workplace. On the Video and Case Studies page for Equity Matters, you will find questions to help guide your personal reflection and/or for group discussion.
In the video below, Dr. Candy Ho shares, “I’m a believer that how you teach is just as important as what you teach,” and explains how she begins each class by telling students, “While everyone will be treated fairly, I won’t be treating you equally as you all need different things to be successful.”
This powerful reflection invites us to rethink equity—not as sameness, but as responsiveness. As you watch, consider what equitable teaching means in your own practice. How can you move beyond equal treatment to truly meet the diverse needs of your students?
Let this be a call to action: to reflect, adapt, and commit to fair and inclusive approaches in both classroom and workplace settings.
Reflection Questions
- How do my current teaching practices support—or unintentionally hinder—equity in the classroom? Consider how your approach may impact students with varying backgrounds, abilities, and needs.
- In what ways can I differentiate my support to ensure all students have what they need to succeed? Reflect on how fairness might look different for each learner, and what adjustments you could make.
- How might offering flexible deadlines support students from diverse backgrounds and with varying life circumstances?
- In what other ways could you build flexibility or responsiveness into your course design to promote equity and inclusion?
