Online tutoring is a lucrative job opportunity, where a tutor works with students in need of assistance in subjects that they struggle in. There is a huge range of subjects that one may choose to tutor in ranging from elementary classes to university-level courses.

1) Choose a Subject

• In this step you must find a subject that you are comfortable in, and you feel that you have a well-rounded understanding of the chosen subject. It is extremely important that you chose a topic that you excel in as your students need to be able to learn from you.

• (Optional) having a degree or work experience in your chosen topic can give you an advantage over other tutors.

2) Choose a topic or specific grade level to tutor in.

• When starting out with tutoring its best to choose a niche topic you understand extremely well to get an understanding of how to teach as well as how prepared you need to be to provide tutoring for a student.

• I will explain this step through an example. If you choose your subject you want to tutor in to be Math, you want to choose a grade level, such as Grade 10 to tutor in first, to gauge where you stand as a tutor, and how prepared you must be for the lessons.

3) Figure out your target audience.

• It is important to have a strong understanding of who you are wanting to tutor and how to meet your student’s needs and requirements. You want to cater your lessons to students based on their characteristics.

For example, if you are tutoring a younger age group you want to use more visuals and make the lessons engaging and fun, so they don’t get bored. Or, if you a tutoring an older age group, you want to be more serious and treat the student with more respect.

6) Register as a tutor

• You can choose whichever website you feel comfortable with. Follow the steps on the particular website to register as a tutor and choose your subject you want to tutor in.

7) Posting adverts to gain private tutoring session

• You may also create craigslist ads, or post flyers up in your neighbourhood to gain private lessons with students that does not have to deal with a tutoring website.

8) What to put on ads

• Make sure on your advertisements you clearly state your name, your phone number, your target audience and what your area of expertise is.

9) Hours and money

• With private tutoring sessions you have to set your wage, as well as how many hours you plan to work, do so at your own convenience.
