Understanding Interculturality: Models of Intercultural Development

Welcome to the journey of Intercultural Development. This section of the text focuses on personal intercultural development  — that is, how do we pursue our own personal growth in understanding ourselves to engage well with those who are different from ourselves. This process is challenging, complex, and rewarding.

Section Learning Objectives

To help us through this process, the content in this part of the text will introduce you to different ways of thinking about intercultural development. By the time you finish this section of the text, you should be able to:

  • Define interculturality and explain how it differs from competence-based models of intercultural development.
  • Describe the general steps through which people move as they increase in their interculturality using the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity as a tool.
  • Explain how dimensional models (Hofstede and Hall) describe differences in national cultures.
  • Explore cultural safety through an Indigenous and intercultural lens.
  • Self-assess current strengths and areas for intercultural development.
