The University of British Columbia’s Xwi7xwa Library collection uplifts Indigenous perspectives by prioritizing the acquisitions of Indigenous authors and/or creators. However, not every title in our branch is from an Indigenous creator. For example, the main author may be non-Indigenous but has worked with community members to produce new research.

To find Indigenous creators, Xwi7xwa has historically added a Local note stating, “First Nations Author”.

Our current practice is to add Biography/history notes that more specifically states the creator’s nation, communities, and treaties. Now you can search our catalogue for words that are nation-specific (example: Oji-Cree/nehiyaw), identity (example: Two-Spirit/Indigiqueer), First Nation (example: Peguis First Nation), or treaty (example: Treaty 1).
