Example: University of Calgary

The University of Calgary has a few ways to locate Indigenous authors. For the scope of what qualifies as an Indigenous author we follow Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s definition “Indigenous Authors” are people who self-identify as Indigenous.

1. Start with going to the library website https://library.ucalgary.ca/
2. Locate the search library resources bar.
   • Using the “search library resources bar” will use a simple search

• • • Clicking “advance search” will allow you to add more criteria before searching, such as:
      • wanting books in English
      • wanting books no articles
      • wanting things published in the last decade
      • wanting things accessible online

You can also use the advanced search to search for different subject headings, such as “Indigenous Author” or “First Nation Author”.

It is important to note that subject headings will change if you’re looking for Indigenous People within Canada, or Indigenous People within the US, or even Indigenous People in Australia. For authors here in Canada we try to use “Indigenous Author”, “Indigenous Poetry”, or “Indigenous Artists Canada.”

We have a contemporary collection called the Indigenous Authors Collection. It is small but growing and contains many interesting works, including comics, poetry, fiction, and memoirs. You can find it by looking up “Indigenous Authors Collection” in the search bar. By using quotations, we are looking for the exact phrase “Indigenous Authors Collection,” and the site will provide a link to the collection.
