Introduction to the Anti-Racism Pedagogy Tool Kit

Intention and Purpose

As based on the Task Force on Anti-Racism, Final Report and Recommendations, the tool kit is designed to support Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s strategic commitment to becoming a truly inclusive, anti-racist, and decolonized organization. It aims to promote sustainable systemic change to address and remove barriers in higher education and create greater access for all. The tool kit equips instructors and instructional teams to implement anti-racist pedagogy in their curriculum and teaching practice across all programs and courses at KPU. In addition, the tool kit underscores the importance of ongoing consultation with Indigenous communities and Elders, as well as BIPOC individuals and communities, to ensure that the tool kit and its implementation remain grounded in lived experiences and are informed by those most affected by racism.

The tool kit provides a comprehensive guide to understanding and implementing anti-racist practices within the KPU community. It serves as a valuable resource for promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion, and for fostering a sense of belonging, safety, and trust for every learner and member of the KPU community. Moreover, the tool kit emphasizes the need for continuous reflection and adaptation to evolving dialogues in post-secondary education, aligning with the Task Force’s report as well as KPU’s approach to anti-racism work.

The content of the tool kit has been adapted from NorQuest College and is based on the recommendations and identified needs of the Task Force’s report. The content is research and evidence -based, reviewed by subject matter experts. It also provides practical recommendations for implementing anti-racist practices in various aspects of the university’s operations and activities. The content highlights the importance of incorporating the voices and experiences of those most affected by racism in the development and implementation of anti-racist practices.

Implementation

The tool kit provides guidance on how to incorporate and implement anti-racist practices into your instruction, course, and assessment design. The recommendations of the Task Force on Anti-Racism have informed the specific tools provided and touch on topics such as changes to curriculum and pedagogy, research, scholarship, and creativity, transparent systems of data collection, student engagement, internationalization, and initiatives to accelerate anti-racism activities at KPU. The implementation section stresses the importance of ongoing consultation and collaboration with Indigenous communities and Elders, as well as BIPOC individuals and communities, in the implementation of the recommendations.
