Developing KPU’s Anti-Racism Pedagogy Tool Kit
The Office of Equity and Inclusive Communities (OEIC), in partnership with the Teaching & Learning Commons, has identified several action items to implement relevant recommendations pertaining to curriculum design and instruction highlighted in the TFA’s final report. This collaboration also extended to other departments, including Accessibility Services and Indigenous Student Services, for their expertise and insights.
The adoption of the Anti-Racism Tool Kit developed by NorQuest College to meet the needs at KPU is one of the initiatives pertaining to curriculum design and instruction that the TLC and OEIC are collaborating on. The following TFA recommendations can be implemented by the guidance and resources identified across the 11 anti-racism pedagogical tools [PDF] created by NorQuest College.
- Need for Education/Training – Recommendations #4, and #5
- Curriculum and Pedagogy – Recommendations #2, #3, and #6
- Research, Scholarship, and Creativity – Recommendations #6 and #7
The TFA Final Report Recommendations Alignment with Norquest Antiracism Tool Kit [DOCX] highlights how the anti-racism pedagogical tool kit items relate to the above recommendations outlined above in the TFA’s final report.
The content of the tool kit has been adapted, with permission, from NorQuest College and is based on the recommendations and identified needs of the TFA’s report (NorQuest College: Anti-Racism Curriculum & Pedagogy Toolkit). The content is research and evidence-based, and it is reviewed by subject matter experts including members of OEIC. It also provides practical recommendations for implementing anti-racist practices in various aspects of the university’s operations and activities. The content highlights the importance of incorporating the voices and experiences of those most affected by racism in the development and implementation of anti-racist practices.
Our vision for embedding anti-racism in curriculum and programs at KPU is to realize the following future states:
- An anti-oppressive and racially inclusive higher education experience and learning environments for all at KPU.
- A sustainable culture of anti-racist pedagogy demonstrated through a variety of inclusive teaching practices.
- Institutionalize key university EDI strategy and policy provisions in curricula and pedagogy
- A leading postsecondary institution model of anti-racist pedagogy in British Columbia, Canada, and globally
