Anti-Racism Pedagogy Tool Kit
Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) Task Force on Anti-Racism (TFA) released its final report and recommendations [PDF] outlining a total of 64 recommendations for KPU in October 2022. These recommendations were broadly categorized into those that could be implemented with immediate effect and those that would either require more time to implement or would be ongoing. Based on the TFA’s Final Report and Recommendations, this tool kit is designed to support Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s strategic commitment to becoming a truly inclusive, anti-racist, and decolonized organization.
It aims to promote sustainable systemic change, through teaching, learning, research, and scholarship, to address and remove barriers in higher education and create greater access for all. The tool kit provides a comprehensive guide to understanding and implementing anti-racist practices within the KPU community and equips instructors and instructional teams to implement anti-racist pedagogy in their curriculum and teaching practice across all programs and courses at KPU. It serves as a valuable resource for promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion, and for fostering a sense of belonging, safety, and trust for every learner and member of the KPU community. In addition, the tool kit underscores the importance of ongoing consultation with Indigenous communities and Elders, as well as BIPOC individuals and communities, to ensure that the tool kit and its implementation remain grounded in lived experiences and are informed by those most affected by racism.
Moreover, the tool kit emphasizes the need for continuous reflection and adaptation to evolving dialogues in post-secondary education, aligning with the Task Force’s report as well as KPU’s approach to anti-racism work.
