Week 9 – Female Reproductive System

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this learning package, the student will be expected to recall the following.

  •  Locate each of the following components of the female reproductive system on the provided diagrams and models:
    • ovary
    • fallopian tube (uterine tube)
    • uterus
    • cervix
    • vagina
    • mons pubis
    • labia majora
    • clitoris
    • prepuce
    • glans
    • labia minora
    • vaginal orifice
    • hymen
    • perineum
    • Skene’s glands
    • Bartholin’s glands
  • Describe the female gonads, the ovaries, considering:
    • location, in relation to fallopian tubes, uterus and broad ligaments
    • number
    • structure, function and origin of the primary follicle, secondary follicle, graafian follicle and corpus luteum
    • distinction between follicle cells and an oocyte
  • Describe the following structural and functional aspects of the fallopian (uterine) tubes:
    • location, in relation to uterus and broad ligaments
    • function of the fimbriae, considering the shape and location
    • three basic tissue coats composing the walls and their function
    • location of the peritoneum
    • usual site of union of sex cells
  • Describe the structural and functional features of the uterus, according to the following guidelines:
    • location, in relation to bladder, rectum and parietal peritoneum
    • normal position within the pelvic cavity
    • location of three main divisions
    • location of two main cavities
    • the three coats composing the walls of the uterus and the function(s) of each
    • the name of the coat that contracts during labour
  • State the number, tissue composition, and function in support of the uterus for each of the following uterine ligaments:
    • broad
    • round
    • cardinal (lateral cervical)
    • uterosacral
  • Describe the structural and functional aspects of the vagina, according to the following guidelines:
    • location, in relation to the urethra, bladder, rectum and uterus
    • type of muscle composing the walls
  • Define each of the following terms:
    • vulva
    • perineum
  • Locate and State the function of each of the following structures composing the female perineum:
    • mons veneris (pubis)
    • labia majora
    • labia minora
    • clitoris
    • prepuce
    • hymen
    • Skene’s glands
    • Bartholin’s glands
  • Identify each of the following components of the female reproductive system on figure 9.4 Breasts.
    • areola
    • nipple
    • fat
    • alveoli glands (lobules)
    • mammary ducts
    • lactiferous sinus
    • lactiferous ducts
  • Identify the role of each of the following structures in lactation:
    • alveoli glands
    • mammary ducts
    • lactiferous sinus
    • lactiferous ducts
    • nipple
